Sustainable Communities

Deer enjoying alfalfa fertilizing an old Gravenstein apple tree, New Year’s Eve 2010, the day we finally moved into the straw-bale tower that we helped to build. I bought the Rodale book on organic gardening when I was 14, and planted my first garden at an old house we rented on Olive Drive in West Hollywood, just below Sunset Boulevard. In the book, they advised ringing apple trees with alfalfa. It turns out our neighborhood deer love it too.
